We went to Poppy’s for brunch with friends, and boy did we enjoy our time at this delightful spot on Whitney Avenue! Street parking is easy and accessible, and Poppy’s is located in a terrific area to walk around and explore. Ambiance: Poppy’s excels at cultivating a warm, welcoming vibe with ample seating both inside and outside. On beautiful days, the outside patio is often full. It was quite busy on a Friday at 1 PM, but we found a table without a problem and it wasn’t too loud inside. The chairs and benches offer a variety of seating options, and we loved the ceiling design and the exposed brick. They offer wifi, but we weren’t able to connect to the internet. The bathroom is lovely. Ordering: Poppy’s menus are robust laminated pages held together by a clipboard, which are sturdy but can be challenging to flip through. To order, you purchase at the register and give them your table number. The ordering system went smoothly for us, and there was only one instance in which an employee came up to us with a plate of food that wasn’t ours. We figured that could just be a FOTD (fluke of the day). Drink: One member of our party ordered a drip coffee, which was quickly prepared and ready at the table as we sat back down. He said it was scrumptious. I was deciding between the pumpkin cinnamon shaken espresso and the pecan pie latte, and the cashier recommended the pumpkin cinnamon shaken espresso for a stronger coffee flavor. I liked it, but it wasn’t my favorite due to its sour taste, and my tablemates did not enjoy it at all. Food: We ordered the BECA (bacon, egg, cheddar, avocado, gochujang mayo) on multigrain toast, an omelette with bacon, cheddar and mushroom, and the veggie egg white wrap. BECA: Tasty, but not mind blowing. The bacon is very thin, like what you’d get on a McDonald’s burger. We don’t recommend getting it on the multigrain. Omelette: Also very good. Not mind blowing, but in our opinion an omelette doesn’t need to be. Just a solid omelette. We liked that you could choose 3 fillings. (Full list of options: mushrooms, spinach, tomato, caramelized onion, bacon, impossible sausage, cheddar, and chevre). It came with homefries, a side salad, and 2 slices of multigrain toast, pre-smeared with butter. It’s quite a lot, and we ended up sharing the toast. There is jelly if you ask for it, but it’s not on display. Veggie Egg White Wrap: This came with onion, mushroom, tomato, avocado, and spinach on a tomato basil wrap. I enjoyed it very much, though it could do with some more creative seasoning. Perhaps a pesto sauce, or feta cheese. I added Cholula. The side salads on all 3 of our meals were fresh and delicious! Provisions: While we were ordering at the register, they kindly brought a bottle of water and cups to the table. We thought this was lovely and very mindful. There is Heinz ketchup and Cholula, but not on every table. Notably, the ketchup is in a glass bottle – classy, but not the most functional. Overall, we were pleased with our experience at Poppy’s, and we would recommend it to anyone looking for a charming breakfast or lunch spot in New Haven. We’re excited to return soon!

4. This spot is really good and I feel like it could be great it’s just not quite there yet. The menu is thoughtful and has all the delicious breakfast choices you could want. We had the omelette- you can pick your fillings (up to 5) and the eggs Benny on bacon. Order at the front - big drink selection but you can’t modify the sweetness level for things like the chai and the Thai iced tea which are both very sweet! An option they could offer might be to add some coffee to it to make it more moderate. They don’t hav decaf coffee but they do have decaf espresso! The food was good - home fries were well seasoned and the toast was nice. The butter on it was a drizzle and a bit weird (see photo)- better to just butter it normally or put butter on the side. The Benny plate was empty-they should serve with home fries or fill with salad. They have packaged jam- again homemade jam would elevate the experience. Atmosphere- bright and sunny cafe, lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Service- was friendly and food came out quickly. They also have specials which is great and a milk station so you can add milk and sugar to your coffee!

I've eating at a lot of brunch places in New Haven, and this is consistently one of the top options. The food and drinks are delicious and great value for the price in my opinions. They have classical breakfast/brunch options available well late into the afternoon, but also a great variety of sandwiches. My favorite is the eggs benny with salmon. They also make great espresso based drinks, which are not often the case with a lot of the breakfast places in new haven. There are plenty of seating options inside and out. And the workers are nice and helpful.

Fantastic brunch spot. Both items we ordered were specials, but the French toast was the star. Everything was so delicious, generous portions, and nice service. Just don't love how you have to order and pay before you sit. Would definitely recommend, and come back here!

Tried this place for the first time over the weekend and it was really great! I have lived in New Haven for about 3 years now and have never been here. I could kick myself for not doing it sooner. The food is made fresh, the taste is amazing, it could use more outside sitting with umbrellas but other than that, i highly recommend this place. Will definitely go back here soon…

This was a decent experience overall, but it wasn't amazing. The food was good, although it was a little pricey for certain meals. I got avocado toast with egg on it, and it was about $17 - it was good but not the best I've had. The atmosphere was very loud, and a bit warm inside. Overall, food was good, atmosphere was okay, and service was decent and quick. It was good, but just not worth 5 stars in my opinion.

I live a few blocks from Poppy’s and when I am low on groceries will walk down to get breakfast, but I always brace myself for the inexplicably chilly interaction with of one of the workers in particular. This person seems incapable of smiling, let alone making small talk, thereby creating what I have come to accept as an almost comically hostile experience literally every visit (they seem to be working often). It’s been a few years now and I keep coming back only because it’s the closest place to get breakfast, and because the BECA burrito is delicious, but find this totally bewildering.
